I attended the Flashbelt conference in Minneapolis, MN a couple of weeks ago, and left fully inspired, energized and a little overwhelmed by the experience. I had the same feeling last year when I left, and wanted to regain the feeling. It basically comes down to spending three 8 hour days getting bombarded with information from the people who are creating genius level work, and the after parties, where you get to talk shop and BS with the best in the industry. I left feeling mentally fatigued, but with a ton of notes from the brain-dump.
I wrote up a summary of the Flashbelt conference and thought I’d share it here. If you have any interest in Flash, internet technology, or similar geeky things, you may enjoy it. I’ve got many, many links to amazing stuff at the end.
Flashbelt 2009
Wrap up notes
If I had to condense everything I was exposed to at Flashbelt into 3 main topics they would be:
1. Convergence
2. Open-Source
3. Simplicity

Flashbelt starts tomorrow – Flashbelt
super excited to learn somethings from the biggest brains in the Flash world! yeehaw
so I’m testing out some new things on my site. Cufon – a text replacement technology for some of the titles and stuff, and SlideshowPro Director Connector plugin for WordPress. Both of those things are helping me control the layout and display of my content and images. I’ve also installed an alternative template that is iPhone specific (WPTouch). I don’t know if I like it, but it’s something to play with. I am experimenting with them all. I hope they enhance my site, rather than cause viewing or browser incompatibilities. But – those things certainly do happen and if they happen to you I apologize.

Here’s my poster for the Street Dogs show this Sunday. Had some trouble with the background halftone but I don’t think it takes away from the image. Neon yellow to red split-fountain. I was thinking about a silver over-print but didn’t think it was needed. Hope for a good turnout and fun show!

I delivered my decks for the Freestyle 50 skateboard art show coming up on June 5 at Screen Ink. I met up with Ryan Holt, the show’s organizer, and he let me preview a couple of decks- very cool stuff. Then we popped over to Screen Ink to see how Bandon Moller and shop owner Jason Davis were coming on Brandon’s deck, a full tip to tail design assembled from vintage woodcut graphics… very intense. Can’t wait to see everything on the wall!
I spent a good portion of the day prepping screens, making and printing separations, burning screens, washing out, drying and taping screens, and then a couple of hours printing … for this!

turned out great and … with only a couple of days notice before the show, I hope it works as a promotional device, and a merchandise item for the band. It will be interesting to meet them Tuesday and see what they think.
[sspdc image=564 style=matrix]Big Business! Last week I noticed a space in Big Business’s tour schedule on May 19th – the fairly typical space that people in Nebraska notice all the time in bands’ tour shedules – the one that has a Minneapolis date and a Denver date with a day off in-between. Usually on a week-night (like this, a Tuesday) the bands take a day off and we don’t ever see them. I did not want this to happen, yet again! I jumped on the horn and notified local music people and a local venue (the Box Awesome) to see what could be done about it. Many people got to work and contacted the band and the band currently on tour with them, Tweak Bird, and, to make a story shorter, they confirmed the date last night. I made this quicky flier design so we can get them out ASAP, and I am also designing a poster which I will print Saturday… so stoked for this show!
Well, here we go: eyeskull skateboards “team” deck, in all its living glory. Now we just need to make a screen for the “pro-model” deck and we’ll be ready to take them to Precision for tape and setup. Maybe. At least tape, maybe setup.
Over-all, this turned out great. I have some touching up to do, but you’re looking at about 95% done.
Not bad for a ghetto setup and process, if I do say so myself.

Here are the 2 eyeskull skate deck designs I’m going to attempt to screenprint for the upcoming Freestyle 50 skateboard art show. I am keeping the designs 2 color to improve my chances for success. I have screenprinted on a deck before, for the 2006 skateboard art show at Tugboat gallery, but the design was much smaller, and probably easier. At any rate, I’ll probably do some prints on shirts or paper too.
Also – I used Hydro74’s free font for the “skateboards” part. Check out Hydro74 here, get the free font here.

(possibly) working on design for upcoming Big Business and Tweak Birk show at Box Awesome on May 19.
working on 2 skate deck designs for upcoming Freestyle 50 Skateboard Art Show
working on Bicycle themed art piece for upcoming Bike themed art show in Oklahoma
working on a site update
working on some other things that are taking me a lot longer to complete than I ever anticipated. I need to focus.
